LA for one night
we will need to stay overnight in LA on our way back from Tonga to Rio next March. We arrive around 2pm on a Tuesday and leave around 1pm on Wednesday. We are looking for a hotel not too far from the airport that is within walking distance from a good mall and preferably from a good restaurant as well. Price range could be $100 to $150, could go a bit higher if the hotel is just right. We've been to LA before and done most of the touristy things, so all we are looking for is some shopping and a decent meal. Any ideas?
Thanks a lot

thanks a lot, that sure sounds like what we are looking for. Any particular hotel? Should we try to book in advance or can we do it at the airport when we get there?

The going rate for a decent 2 1/2* or 3* at LAX (Marriott Courtyard, Sheraton) is $45 or so on Priceline. I doubt that after that kind of trip you'll be in the mood to do much except veg, but you could always spend the $65 you saved on a nice cab ride / meal in Marina Del Rey or Santa Monica.

www.quikbook.com - Shows a few hotels
www.hoteldiscount.com - Shows multiple hotels.
... and of course www.expedia.com for a list of hotels in Santa Monica.
The top 2 show discounted rates.
I'm not sure how much a cab will cost from LAX to Santa Monica.

dhammer53's suggestion for Santa Monica is especially good in that, besides the mall (Santa Monica Place), there is also excellent shopping in boutiques and smaller, more individual stores on Montana Ave. and on South Main Street (home to Wolfgang Puck's best restaurant, Chinois on Main):

I think the OP was looking for a hotel where they could walk from the hotel itself to the shopping and restaurants. Staying right by LAX won't allow them to walk to Third Street in Santa Monica.

The Oceana and Shangri-la are particularly well-located with great views.

You can also consider the Manhattan Beach area, which is just south of LAX. There is a decent mall (Manhattan Village) as well as adjacent shopping complexes. There are also decent food offerings in the area. There is a Marriott in the area and the main cluster of airport hotels on Century Blvd. are only a five min drive away.

FlyingHawaiian covered it nicely. I'd recommend Manhattan Beach if you want to stick in LAX area.
If you're willing to go farther (and yes, Santa Monica IS farther - sorry dan), then Santa Monica is a good option. Santa Monica about 25 minutes from LAX.
Either place will be good for you. Cheers. Sharon...

Downtown LA not too far
I may be a little late to this thread but here are some other suggestions, besides Santa Monica which is a great place to visit.
1) downtown LA is only about 25mins from the airport and has a lot going on. There are some nice hotels there and you can find some good restaurants too in walking distance - no need to rent a car.
2) you could stay in Pasadena. It's a little further but a ton to do in the old town area. There is a gorgeous Ritz Carlton where you can get coroprate rate of $130 or you can stay in the Marriott right in old town, or the Westin about 10min walk.

I'd have to disagree w/ rasalamon - at least for your specific request & given it's a 24-hour stay (otherwise agree w/ her). Both downtown LA & Pasadena are further away & you'd eat up time getting to/from there.
I'd stick w/ Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Marina del Rey, or Santa Monica for what you specified in your OP.
Cheers. Sharon
