OK guys, let's take the debate over subjective crime statistics to Omni. We'll stipulate that the OP needs to make their own informed decision about taking the train in late evening.

I think (for me) $20/day for 29 days don't worth the upgrade. I prefer stay with Cruise.

If you're not too tired from your flight (12h is pretty long though :(), I'd suggest going into downtown LA earlier than 6pm. That part of the city--and north of it--has experienced a bit of a resurgence the past 5 years.

Just don't head too far south of Staples :)
