Agree with you. It's true.

All the cars based at Hertz LAX should have the transponder already but someone may have done a one-way rental and return a non-LAX car (e.g. from Las Vegas), which will not have the transponder. If you get one without transponder, just ask them to switch the car for you.

NO cars at Hertz LAX have FasTrak. They do not offer it.

Your hotel is right by a Green Line station. You can get from there to Staples Center via the Green and the Silver lines in less than an hour.

As a born & raised Angelino, I would advise to steer clear of the Green line & Blue line at night...especially a tourist. I don't care where they are from the areas that these two lines travel through are the worst in L.A...especially the transfer point between the two.

First of all, my recommendation was for the Green and the Silver lines.

Secondly, very little crime is reported on all these rapid transit lines.

Really? I guess a murder does not count as crime. You don't have a clue. http://ktla.com/2014/08/27/2-women-a...metro-station/

Why don't you spend some time reading Yelp reviews of the lines...and what people encounter to inform yourself.

The reason why Hertz does not offer FasTrak at LAX is hardly anyone would ever use it (I can't comment about other rental agencies at LAX but I am a very frequent poster in the Hertz forum and Hertz LAX is my home station...I rent there a lot). We only have two, rather short, pay lanes in Los Angeles County (BOTH of which are former carpool lanes). The 110 from just north of the 405 to just south of the 10 freeway. And the 10 freeway east of Downtown Los Angeles to about El Monte. Hardly worth the trouble getting it if you are just going to one event. Just add 20 minutes to your trip...one way. STAY OUT of the FasTrak lanes or you will get a $30 ticket charged to your credit card. My friend who rented from Hertz LAX in December 2013 got one 3 months later...

The 105 freeway from the 405 to the 110 may end up being the busier part of your route. I have driven that many times at rush hour. Not pretty. The 91 freeway to the 110 may be a better route for you.

IF you must have one, here's their details. https://www.metroexpresslanes.net/en/faq/fastrak.shtml

By your logic, tourists should avoid the Hollywood Walk of Fame which had two homicides in the past year and another one fifteen months ago.

Crime stats show that crime rate on Metro buses and trains is much lower than in surrounding neighborhoods.

The good news: crime is very low on the Metro system — certainly lower than in many surrounding communities. Over the past five years, the number of the most serious crimes has gone down and the number of arrests and citations issued is up.

The bad news: the Metro system is not crime-free and it’s not immune to some of the ills of the cities that it serves. That’s just the unfortunate reality.
Yelp's anecdotes do not make reliable statistical data.

Whether or not the green, blue, or silver lines are safe isn't so much the issue to me as it basically comes down to this question:

If you can afford C/J/F (have a rental car), why would you subject yourself to E- (LA public transit at night in the sketchier parts of LA)? If the OP were going to a concert at the Hollywood Bowl and wanted to take the shuttle from West LA, I wouldn't even blink an eye.

Consider the possibility that OP has just arrived from a long flight originating in South America and has never driven on the Los Angeles freeways.

You're going to compare Hollywood with South Central Los Angeles? You're just making me laugh even more. Thanks for letting us know you don't know Los Angeles AT ALL. Hollywood crimes are primarily bar/club related (at night) and car break-ins during the day.

I'd take the actual reports from locals over so-called crime stats ANYDAY.

Crime statistics? For one, South Central Los Angeles has the most unreported crimes of all areas. Why? Illegal aliens (residing in the area) who refuse/won't report and area residents who are too scared to report. Where are the gangs located? What's their mode of transportation? Plus anyone who knows Los Angeles knows how the city and county water down their crime stats.

During the day the Green Line, Blue Line or any bus line in the area is at best o.k. to use. After dark, you're opening yourself up to being a crime victim. Period. If you don't have street smarts, stay away.

I have NEVER seen a Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy (or any other law enforcement) on the Green or Blue line (or at any platform). I've never paid a cent to ride the Green Line either since the turnstiles are always broken...even after they are supposedly fixed as reported to the media.

You want a crime map...why don't you post the Violent Crimes map? Where are they committed? Right along the area of the lines you're suggesting. http://maps.latimes.com/neighborhood...hborhood/list/

I've only been professionally affiliated with the Los Angeles County criminal justice system for several decades, but then as everyone knows, Yelp trumps that.

I drove in New Jersey to NY in rush our, with time to leave the car, time to check in in apartment and rainy...this count ?? just kidding :D

@CalItalian

Since you are a Hertz LAX expert, can I ask you about my rental ?

I'm gold basic...booked via pre paid voucher, the Chevrolet Cruze, since I need to save fuel (last year in another big trip the Prius help us with this). This year I changed the car and chose Cruze. If I had an upgrade, what car is good to economize fuel ?

Prius again or another model ?

It is a big roadtrip during 29 days.

And interesting debate about LA areas.

I've only worked in the Los Angeles radio and tv news business for three decades. I know exactly what is going on in Los Angeles. You certainly don't.

Hertz has such a huge lot of cars, your chances of getting a Cruze are quite good. They do have many Pirius cars but an upgrade may cost you $30-$40 day based on the Hertz Carfirmation upgrades I have had this year and that's not worth it with gas around $3.75 gallon or less lately. You may be able to get than down to $20/day or a little less negotiating with a Gold agent (be sure to go into the Gold office or see the roving Gold agent at Hertz LAX for upgrades...they give better cars than the regular agents).

I normally drive a full size or larger and the best gas mileage I get is with a Camry so I really can't answer your question. Head over to the Hertz forum and search/ask your question there.

I don't know what time you arrive at Hertz LAX but my experience for the best time to rent a car there is anytime after sunrise in the morning (that's when they are most stocked with cars). Saturdays are the worst day...fewest available cars. Gold Choice, most days, is most filled around 9 am. I've been there so many times, that's the only time I rent now.
