A cople of days ago I spoke to Jossyln at Latinpass and she informed me that a few days before that KLM had informed Latinpass that there was very limited availability for the rest of the year

Harvey - do you mean Latin Pass advised KLM of this, or the other way around?

I see in the FD brochure page 51 (English version page 52 anyway!) that there is an award 'Sth America Area #1' Zone J - which means I think 15,000 FD points for Y class and 30,000 for business class each way.

Joh and I have tickets booked to Rio in early August. We spent New Year's Eve there, so would rather visit elsewhere this visit. Page 59 says "Area 1" covers Brazil - and Bolivia and Peru are 2 others in area #1.

1. Does anyone know WHICH carrier (one of the Latin Pass crowd I guess?) flies say Bolivia to Rio on KLM award tickets?

2. Do KLM awards allow open-jawing - i.e. if we fly into La Paz Bolivia can we fly back to Rio out of Cuzco etc if we make our own way overland? (It may well be 2 different LP airlines involved here I imagine?)

3. Does this current 10% discount on FD awards apply to Latin awards from non KLM airlines? i.e. would this cost 60,000 less 10% for the round trip in August?

4. Most important - has anyone had experience with whether awards are hard or easy to redeem? Especially at this time of year i.e. August 10 - 18th say.

5 ... are there "blackout" zones via the Latin Pass carriers?

I think that Harvey means flying KL on an LP award, viz. the reverse of what you want.

AFAIK, no LP airline flies GIG to LPB. You can fly GRU to LPB on Taca via LIM.

Thanks Nick. Yes that is how I read [/b]Harvey's[/b] post to be honest.

Would rather avoid GRU airport as it is a frenetic dump. United *may* allow us to change the ticket however to GRU. And I see Taca fly to Quito and La Paz via Lima, and at 6.35am, and we arrive at 9.10am into Rio.

So we are stuck with flying SOMEWHERE interesting out of Rio in the KLM SA zone 1 or 2, and Bolivia and Peru and Ecuador interest us most. So Taca flies to La Paz from GRU, and no-one else? I noted Copa flew Sao Paulo to Quito but with huge time differences (leaves 1.10pm arrives 9.23pm) so no idea where that routing stops unless it is just time zones at play??

It looks like you have to connect in Lima to get from Sao Paulo to Quito on Taca. There must be quite a layover there--since you are flying West and gain 2 hours!

Your problem is that LP has no brasilian partner, so wherever you go from Brazil, you will have to fly via an LP airline hub. Also, AFAIK, only Avianca fly out of Rio (to BOG). Others fly out of GRU: Copa to Panama and Taca to Lima. That is it, I am afraid. The only other LP airline (Aeropostal) only fly to Northern Brazil (Manaus and Boa Vista)
