How long are you going to be in LV and how many are in your party?

I am a person that finds it is often better to rent a car. Of course many things factor in to the equation.

Do you want to get a big picture of Vegas, or maily plan to stay in your hotel to gamble or convention activity.

Depending on how many trips you make from one end of the strip to the other a car may work for you better than taxis. Free valet parking at all hotles on the strip (tip the attendant) and ample self parking.

You will walk alot just going through the hotels.

So factor in your airport trips, any planned side trips, and trips to places you amy want to see where you'll take a cab. (e,g If you want to visit Mandalay Bay from your hotel you don't want to try to walk there and back.)

limo from airport for 6? worth it?

The family is getting into Vegas tomorrow (New Years Eve for those of you not keeping track) and I'm very afraid of the cab line.

Do you think it would be worth it to pre-arrange transportation (we have a total of 6 travelling to the Renaissance hotel)? If so, which company do you recommend? We'd rather not share and have our own car/van.

Thanks!

Yes, it's worth it. I suspect rental cars are in short supply, but on several occasions at LAS I've found it cheaper to rent a car (free parking at almost all hotels) than take cabs or limos, so you might check that angle.

I don't know about renting a car, especially since the Monorail opened again, and parking in the casinos can be a pain.

What I've experienced is that the cab lines are shorter than the limo lines, but I do think you are going to have to wait regardless, since I expect it will be a busy day tomorrow.

The limo lines are long even when you sign-up and prepay? The ones I am looking into pick us up at the baggage claim area.

Check out "Las Vegas Limos" (LVL). They used to have a website, and are located right outside the main terminal baggage claim area. The six of you and all your luggage should probably fill the limo, but they have been known to squeeze in one or two more. Depends how busy they are and which direction you're heading, when you arrive.

When the family goes generally it's worth it to me. When I travel alone I don't mind the taxi line and BS, but to me it's worth the cost for the family. The hotel I stay at (Venetian) usually has an arrangement with a few firms and can recommend a good one. Having a driver meet us at the baggage area is a great help to me, and since we come from overseas with lots of luggage we usually don't get a limo, but a van. Call your hotel's desk and they should be able to give you a good one or they can arrange to have a limo / car / van there to meet you. If you have a host call your host and they can arrange it also.

Usually they want to know if it will be paid cash or charge and your name, if charge card then they'll want your cc number. If you say cash then I've never had to give a cc number out ahead of time even if I paid with the CC at arrival.

OOPS, didn't see you're at Renaissance, still worth a shot to call them direct and ask them.

I looked up some things from the past and the only info I have anymore is for Bell Transportation, www.bell-trans.com

Would love a report about the marriott when you get back. You're near the Sands and that's the reason I stay at Venetian.

The Venetian can provide a limo. It will cost $35-50 and a $5-10 tip is expected on top of that.

If you tip a McCarran porter $1-2 a bag, he'll take you right to the front of the cab line.

How To Get From The Airport

Leave for three nights Aug 16. Not enough time to drive to the Hoover Dam, so we won't be renting a car. What's the best way to get to the Venetian from the airport? Landing at 9 PM. Take a cab, is there a bus, does the hotel have a van or similar?

Take a cab. Don't waste your time on a bus or shuttle. Sure you'll save a few bucks, but a cab won't be that expensive and you'll get to your destination much faster. The Venetian will not have a van. They have limos available for their casino guests (a.k.a. high rollers), but if you'd gambled enough to get the limo you'd already know about it.

Hoover Dam is only about 30 to 45 minutes away depending on where you are coming from.

Taxi...definitely. You will wait in line, but it moves quickly. The toughest thing is finding the taxi stand while exiting the airport. Very poor signage at LAS airport.

Taking a taxi - make sure you tell the driver to go via Tropicana and Koval (which is parallel to Las Vegas Blvd). Otherwise some of the drivers long-haul you via the 15 freeway and exit Mountain Spring Blvd. adding at least $5 to your tab. Tropicana/Koval will be approximately $17. If you are long-hauled then the tab is $22-23 or more if there is traffic but since you are on weekdays it may not be a significant problem.
