Where shall I take her ?

Forgive me, but no doubt this has cropped up before. My wife wants me to take her to Vegas next Easter, (mid April) for our wedding anniversary....how do I go about getting the very best rates for any of the 'better' hotels on the strip...like the MGM,Mirage, Luxor,Bellagio etc.,...in fact, I'm really struggling to know which hotel to go for...not being avid gamblers...decisions, decisions !

First, the "average" gambler in Las Vegas spends about $100 USD per day. So you don't have to worry about being a high-roller. Depending on the time of year, good rates can be available at the major hotels, especially if a weekend is not involved. I would price compare using several different travel web sites (expedia.com, orbitz.com, lodging.com) and the hotels own web site. In addition, I have heard people getting good deals via Priceline.com.

It helps to know if you have requirements or preferences. For example, do you have to stay at a "name" hotel? Do you have to be on the section of Las Vegas Blvd known as "the strip"? Do you need a particular type of room? Probably the most important question is what is your budget?

I've been to LV many times and stayed at a number of the hotels. My favorite is the MGM Grand. It's the largest hotel in LV (5000+ rooms), has many great places to eat, a nice casino and is located on the strip in walking distance of several other hotels and tourist attractions.I've gotten to know some of the management folks there and recommend the MGM to my friends.

I hope this helps. If you have additional questions, feel free to contact me directly.

Hi: my own personal feeling is that I dislike the MGM. I find it to be a very noisy, chaotic atmosphere, and while I love my grandchildren, I don't go to Vegas to have a million kids running around. That is what I personally experienced at the MGM. I prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. My favorite of those you mention would be the Bellagio, very elegant hotel and no children allowed in unless they are guests of the hotel. Not cheap however. I don't particularly love the Luxor. The Mirage is beautiful but gets so many tourists running through that it is a bit chaotic there as well. Over the years I have found that the farther in advance you book, the cheaper the room. As the hotel fills up, the rates go up as well. Many of the hotels have promotional packages on their websites. Weekdays are always cheaper than weekends, and in some cases, if you book a package from an airline you will get a better rate than if booked separately. While it is just my opinion, I believe that Mandalay Bay is much more elegant than Luxor or many others. They have made a man-made beach and ocean. Hope you have a splendid time there.

To get the best rates, you'll need to do quite a bit of research.

1) If at all possible, avoid Friday and Saturday nights, which are much more expensive.

2) Check Expedia for special rates.

3) Check for package rates both including and excluding air.

4) Check the hotel web sites.

5) Check www.biddingfortravel.com to see what you might get if you bid through Priceline.

6) If you have ever gambled at any of these places, call the number on the back of your player's card and ask what they can do for you. You might qualify for "casino rate."

Bellagio is in a class by itself.

MGM and Venetian are close behind.

Paris and Mandalay Bay are a notch below.

Luxor, Monte Carlo, and New York New York are nice places that can often be had at a bargain.

Aladdin and Bally's are decent and often quite cheap.

Have a wonderful time in Sin City!

And how could I forget the Mirage? Still a very nice hotel, it's often the best bargain in town.

I like the Four Seasons. Sumptuous rooms, very comfortable beds, and outstanding service.

Go during the week (Sun-Thurs), and book a suite at the Mirage.

With a paid suite you'll get the "Royal Service" which includes:

-limousine service to and from the airport
-fresh flowers in the suite
-priority seating for the Siegfried & Roy Show
-priority seating in the Mirage restaurants (line passes)
-priority tee times at various golf courses

You'll have an excellent time, and will feel like a 'player' with a limo pickup

The suites at the Mirage run about 2x the standard room rate, but it is worth it, IMHO. You'll get an "experience" vs. getting a room.

The Mirage is in a great location, and is still one of my favorite resorts in Vegas.

Most 3-day weekends fill up fast & can be high priced, but maybe Easter is different. I like www.cheapovegas.com , which has links to each place's website, and humorous reviews of each hotel/casino. I also like the prices at www.travelworm.com .
