KLM Fokker retirement

Must have been discussed, but could not find it.
There is an article in the NRC (only Dutch) about KLM retiring most Fokker-100 by 2010, and the others depending on their age.

Speaking of Fokkers what would be a good replacement for the F50's when they get scrapped? If you take into account VLM there's a sizable number of F50's in the group.

Personally I like flying them, but eventually they'll need to be replaced.

In terms of size, I guess an ATR 42 would be the nearest equivelent to the F50's available.

That will still leave them with five F100, and at least 35 F50/F70s, not including the VLM fleet. Unless they place a major order now, the Fokkers will be around for quite some time yet.

Decision on F50 replacement to be made in 2009. KLM have gone on record stating ATR42 is too small. ATR-72 and Q400s the only models mentioned as being potential replacements. Doesn't mean other types are not being considered, but if they want to stay with Tprops, there isn't much else out there new.

Indeed, CRJ provides some sensible models with this sort of seating arrangement, and so does embraer, who got the last big contract with Cityhopper and Regional. When it comes to replacing the 100, the A318 is obviously a great option, especially in case of another joint AF/KL order. I wish KL would follow AF on replacing their 737s by A318/319/320/321 which I find more comfortable, more silent, faster, and with bigger seats.

Too heavy (MTOW 59 tons as opposed to 44 tons).

Not likely, given KL's considerable investment in its 737 fleet and the staff to fly and maintain it, not to mention their outstanding order for a considerable number of 737-700s. A common replacement for the current mainline shorthaul fleets will probably only be considered when Boeing and/or Airbus announce their all-new narrowbody products, somewhere between 5 and 8 years from now.

ATR and Bombardier are considering developing upgraded versions of their turboprop aircraft.

I actually completely agree with you! It was more my dreaming than my ever thinking it would happen, although indeed, both airlines will need to renew their short+medium haul fleet within the next 5-7 years, and I would guess they will make it a joint order in order to get a better deal. In a way, pilots switching from 738/739 to 318/19/20/21 is not harder than switching from 733/734 to 738/739 so things could change around 2015!!

What are the major F50 destinations at the moment? I would really like to fly one of these before they go.

I fly the F70 regularly but the turboprop would be a great experience I think :-)

The very last scheduled F50 flight will be KL1026/27mar10 LHR-AMS...

Current F50 destinations are CGN/DUS/BRE/LUX and the above mentioned LHR flight (KL1025/26)...check carefully, though, as most are a mix of F50/F70 !!!

Fly VLM from RTM to LCY, these are solely operated with Fokker 50's, and can be booked on KL code share.

I had the pleasure flying this route last week, not sure though when these F50's are taken out of service.

This is not correct !!!

KL1804-28mar10 (Summer 2010 schedule) will be operated by F70, and, consequently, KL1813-27mar10 will be 'upgraded' from F50 to F70...moreover, already >50 passengers booked on KL1804, so cannot be 'degraded' to F50 !

Here's an overview of the current F50 scheduled flights, operated by KLC:

KL1721/1722--BRU
KL1807/1808/1811/1812/1813-n/s-1804--CGN
KL1857/1858--DUS
KL1025/1026--LHR
KL1753/1754--BRE

Enjoy the last KLC F50's...as said above, Cityjet/VLM will continue to operate F50's, but not from/to AMS...
