On Board Upgrades

I think I read something somewhere that seems to imply that you can pay on board to upgrade...how does it work pricewise and who do you pay ? Credit or a bundle of dirty notes ? Anybody done it ?

I was sitting in 21H on an AMS-NRT 744 not too long ago and overheard a man talking to a senior FA/purser in the galley about doing just that.

I believe he was deterred by the price, which IIRC was in the mid $1K range. It may have been based on actual fare paid (as opposed to the difference between C and S/Y), but I remember thinking at the time that FD miles seemed quite valuable

I aksed once for a friend and was told this was possible that that they would have to pay the difference between fare paid and c class - so there's little incentive to do this. On the BA board it seems that this is possible on that airline for a flat rate/fee.
