Dump WP for FD?
In January I moved from SFO to AMS. I decided to keep a mailing address in the US and adjusted all my FF accounts accordingly. Along the way, however, NW ended up picking up on my change of address and recently sent me a letter inviting me to transfer my points and status into an FD account.
My original thought was that the conversion rate of 1 mile to .8 FD points wasn't worth it, though they will throw in a 5000 FD point enrollment bonus.
They also offered RW status for 12 months, which is what has me thinking about taking their offer. I haven't been doing much travel this year, and won't be maintaining my silver status on NW. By accepting KL's RW offer, I would in effect extend my elite benefits from the February expiration on NW for 6 more months. Would I fly KL in that period? Likely, but not for sure.
I wouldn't be surprised to see me end up back in the US after a few years, which begs the question of what the conversion rate in the opposite direction would do as my FD points once again become WP miles. I'm aware of the differences between the FP system, the geographic differences (and the degree to which I'd be discriminated against as a Netherlands based FD member), and other "benefits" of FD. Should I take NW up on their offer to come over to FD for awhile or is that a rash thing to do given that I don't even have concrete plans to fly either KL or NW soon.

You also have to consider the advantages ( few though they are ) of the current FD programme - lounge access/one way awardsetc.
Of course, if KLM does change their programme as rumoured who knows what will happen.

The system integration is bad so if you want to use your miles Stateside I would stick with WP and stick with a US mailing address.

I decided to call WP and ask them, if I were to move back to the US at some point, what the conversion in the reverse direction would be.
They told me that this was a one-way offer only and if I ever moved back to the US I would be unable to transfer my FD points to WP. I would need to keep a European mailing address and use my points through their program.
I take that with a grain of salt, but I still decided to stick with WP.
