I've been to a few ex-British colonies (Mauritius, Malaysia) and the language they speak there is not exactly your Queen's English. So I wouldn't be that surprised

P.S. OK, French is more widely spoken in Mauritius that English is, and I still noticed some differences, even when people were speaking proper French as opposed to Mauritian Creole. Anyway, languages do evolve...
