13 hour overnight connection at AMS - would bags be checked through?

I'm looking at a KLM flight that has a 13 hour connection at AMS, overnight. I'd be checking bags. I see there is an airport hotel behind security that you can only bring hand luggage to. How can I know for sure whether or not my bags would be checked through to my destination?

As a general rule, in most countries/airlines, your bags are registered to your final destination. Only in certain countries, do you have to retrieve them and recheck en transit.

As your correspondance is overnight, you can either have them sent to your final destination (I believe this is default), or you can request that it be short-checked and retrieve them for your overnight stay at AMS, and recheck next day.

This is something I did yesterday (PEK-AMS-EDI) and chose to stay overnight in AMS rather than sit jet-lagged in AMS for 5 hours before the flight to EDI. By default my bags were booked through to EDI and duly arrived on the belt at EDI this morning. It worked well and I will probably do this more often in the future.
