KLM seems to not be offering me any seat on my ticket!

It tells me to pick a seat, but every seat costs an extra fee! That's sounds illegal to force someone who has already bought a ticket to pay more for a seat.

Relax, they won't force you to fly standing up, or sitting on the floor. (That has been known to happen, though, albeit not on KLM).

You will get a seat with your ticket, of course. However, reserving a specific one ahead of check-in does incur a fee.

You are not forced at all to reserve a seat and pay extra. When KL opens their online check-in, you can pick your seat for free. Although: a middle seat may be all that's left by then. But if you want to reserve a seat before online check-in opens, yes, then it will cost you

This is also true for other airlines in Europe such as Lufthansa. I do pay to reserve a seat early if the aircraft and my class of service mean that there's a chance of getting a middle seat. For AMS-CPH-AMS later this year, I paid the fee in one direction, where the plane is a 738, but not in the other, where it will be an E-195, which has no middle seats.

And the 777 too - and it's the weirdest thing, during takeoff and landing you are looking your seat neighbor in the face because the middle four seats are in alternate directions (the outer two face forward, the inner two backward).

BA, as mentioned. They try to hide it by facing some seats backwards but this monstrosity is 2-4-2 where cabin width allows:

(Where the cabin isn't wide enough like 787 they install it as 2-3-2).
