I can think of any number of mundane activities that most people engage in on a daily basis that are statistically even more "absolutely horrific". Besides, commercial aviation has been much unsafer than the MD11 for most of its history. By your standards, no aircraft would ever have gotten off the ground, and we would still all be walking, driving cars, or taking the bus or train. Oh, wait a minute, all those are much less safe than flying!

I've been flying since 1959, initially a lot in various Antonovs, Ilyushins and what-have-you-not. Now those aircraft had really "horrific" accidents statistics. That didn't seem to stop many people from flying them.

My advise is to relax, never take counsel of your fears, and stop worrying about puny risks. Dont' let statistics keep you from enjoying life!

I've had a very intersting landing at DAR when they were resurfacing the runway, once section at a time. Touchdown was fine, but when the hit the runway section that was missing the top layer it felt as if all the tires burst at the sme time. That particular aircraft had also been operating without an APU for over a week (the APU is not a MEL item), so at JRO (no GPU) they kept the middle engine running, and the airco switched off. Nice and warm, and a tremendous racket.
