JetBlue files for ORD slots

United doesn't fly to JFK and has all but given up on southern Florida out of ORD, but some serious competition if JetBlue wants to start up ORD-LGB compared to LAX and SNA

I would guess that these slots will be used for JFK and BOS first. My understanding was that they don't have many/any LGB slots left.

Doesn't seem quite right to me that AA and UAL were forced to give up slots to relieve congestion and now others are being considered for new slots.

I agree

The other question is what gate(s) and terminal will they use?

True, but LGB isn't *that* busy (when compared to LAX or SNA). I'm sure they could buy more.

Yes, they should take Teddy's MDW slots...

I don't think it has to do with how busy LGB is, but rather noise abatement and active community groups.

The local NIMBY crowd won't let it happen.

I doubt that JetBlue from ORD - JFK/BOS would adversely affect UA at all. The UA fares on these routes are already dirt cheap (ORD-LGA not JFK), and I doubt JetBlue could undercut them too much.

If they were able to opperate flights to the west coast then UA might have to look into cutting fares, but it won't be as bad as Independace was at IAD. IMHO.

I never knew that was an issue w/ LGB...most of it is next to the 405, and the homes that aircraft overpass are not that great.

Compare that to SNA w/ the roaring takeoff procedures that take you over some of the most expensive real estate in the U.S...I'd figure LGB would be a piece of cake.

It certainly is strange. According to the Wikipedia,

"The airport is under one of the strictest ordinances in the United States on both airport noise and the number of commercial flights. The current noise levels allow for a maximum of 41 daily commercial flights and 25 commuter flights. Local community groups and activists are very vocal about any changes at the airport."

More information would provide context:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_Be...icipal_Airport

Although commercial flights are severely restricted, there are still a large number of flights at the airport from charter flights, private aviation, flight schools, law enforcement flights, helicopters, advertising blimps, planes towing advertising banners, etc. Because of that, Long Beach airport is one of the busiest general aviation airports in the world, with more than 300,000 annual general aviation operations.

Good luck finding a C-17 hushkit.

http://www.eltoroairport.org/issues/LGB.htm

41 mainline plus (in theory) 25 "commuter" commercial flights max per day, unless and until quieter aircraft come along and more can be squeezed into the same overall "noise budget".

fascinating reading on how the scarce slots are carved up:
http://www.longbeach.gov/airport/noi..._agreement.asp

If B6 is entering ORD, it won't be ex-LGB. even with the slots, they would likely be driven out as they were from LGB-ATL.
