I've been there
Puerto Rico is beautiful, but you have to be careful where you wander. When i've visited it's always been with locals.
All the luxury hotels are on a strip of beach called Isla Verde. There are also hotels in Old San Juan, which is the place you'd want to hang out to experience the tourist side of Puerto Rico. It's basically a section of town where you can walk around and see alot of different stuff. You shouldn't have a problem with the food. Most restaraunts will serve authentic rice and bean dishes, along with chicken or pork. The best ones are the diners and luncheonettes, which aren't expensive.
Have you found a place to stay? How long are you staying?

condado
If I remember correctly, condado is down near where the cruise ships dock.? I'm not sure to be honest, I think there are some hotels/casinos and boutiques. If you're there for just 2 days then what you have planned should be good. You can just spend the rest of the time on the beach...
There is a place called El Morro near Old San Juan that is pretty cool. It's a fortress that was built by the Dutch? Or maybe to defend themselves against the dutch, My memory isn't so great for stuff like this.
Have a great time!

Anyway, Condado is on the North side of the city, just across a bridge from Old San Juan. It is a very decent area, with the beachfront lined with hotels - most of them mid-level to upscale. (Although interestingly, unless they've finally removed it, the Marriott is right next to a motel that literally became so dilapidated that it fell over onto the beach.)
Condado is nice, and the main street (Avenida Ashford) is safe, clean, and busy, but I wouldn't stray too far off the main streets alone at night.

If you like history, go to the two sites managed by the Conservation Trust--Las Cabezas de San Juan in Fajardo and Hacienda Buena Vista in Ponce (there is so much to see and do in Ponce).
A good site for information: http://welcome.topuertorico.org/index.shtml
Enjoy!
