How does JB credit card statement credit work

Jet Blue, when one attempts to book a flight, is now offering a $100 statement credit for JB-related charges when applying for its credit card. Does one first need to apply for the card and receive it in the mail before one can book a flight to which the statement credit would apply? Or, can both be done simultaneously?

I recall with a similar Delta offer a few years ago one could apply for their Amex card and immediately charge a flight to the card without having to wait, assuming one was immediately approved.

Link to this offer? That's regarding vacations packages:

Enjoy an annual $100 statement credit
after purchasing a JetBlue Vacations
package of $100 or more
You get it after your vacation as a -$100 credit on the following statement. I wouldn't recommend signing up for the JB+ card for that because 1) you have to purchase those vacations on the JetBlue website and 2) they are marked up to cover the cost if you're not careful about it.

That’s not the offer I’m referring to. The $100 statement credit offer is popping up when one attempts to book a flight on the jet blue website; it appears on the lower right hand side of the screen along with the selection of flights.

As a follow up, we waited until the JB credit card arrived to book the flight. The $100 statement credit appeared one week after the purchase, before the first statement was issued. Also part of this offer for a “no fee in first year” card are 5000 JB points, earned upon charging $1000 in first 90 days.

There appear to be other offers out there now, but this one worked for me is.
