checked baggage in taped box?

i apologize for this not being a TrueBlue-related post, but it it is a JetBlue-related post.

my question is this - i am traveling for work in a couple weeks with a good amount of tools and equipment (about $3,500 worth). i doubt that i will be able to carry it on, but if i check it, i don't trust the baggage guys to not take anything (i've had far less valuable stuff stolen before). if i put it all in a regular old cardboard box and tape it up (similar to it would be if being shipped), will they be able to open it up and look through it?

on the way back, i'm probably going to ship it. but that's not an option for the arriving flight.

if anyone can offer any thoughts, i would appreciate it. thanks a lot,

brian

What about buying a really cheap suitcase and locking this inside it with a TSA approves lock? I've done this before when I needed to get expensive electronics someplace with me and shipping wasn't feasible.

ok, maybe this is a stupid question - but wouldn't they have access to a TSA-approved key?

i also don't know how i feel about those TSA approved locks. on two separate occasions, i've had them ripped off my luggage. "they" (whoever they may be) ripped the whole tag off of the zipper and left only the part that is in contact with the teeth. needless to say, i wasn't very happy about that. after the second time, i stopped using the TSA-approved locks.

Welcome to FlyerTalk!!

If anyone needs to open the box to inspect it then they will do so. That's just the way it is. Probably won't happen and you can declare the higher value to the carrier at check-in if you want but that's basically the way it works.

buy a hard-sided suitcase and a cheap flare gun or starter pistol.

when you check the bag, you need to declare that you have a firearm inside, and then you get to (you're FORCED to) put a real lock on the suitcase.

The TSA will be sure to take extra, extra special care of it, and they don't get to look inside/pilfer through your stuff.
