another JR pass thread

k so i will be landing in tokyo and staying there for 3 days, then going to mt fuji, yokohama, nikko, kyoto for 2 days and osaka for 2 days.. then hiroshima, miyajima island and i will be trying for kamakura as well... i'm looking into the 14 day pass.... is it worth getting the 2 week pass if going to those areas? also is the JR pass worth innercity travel? are there a lot of stops in each city?

Welcome supreetd

depends on what u want

travel beyond tokyo crammed into 1 wk? get 1 wk pass

freedom to travel for longer? get 2 wk pass

is innercity travel worth 17,000yen (cost of extra wk w/ pass)? no.

(eg. tokyo to kamakura = 1,400y return trip)

lots of stops in each city? in tokyo??? yes! lots + lots + lots

suggestion:

frugal option = 1 wk jr pass (u have 2 plan)

extravagant option = 2 wk jr pass (b lzy)

You could figure this all out yourself using the Hyperdia timetable.

I'm pretty sure Nikko is not JR btw.

Well, you are right - and you are wrong.

There are two routes to Nikko - one using JR lines (JR Pass works) from Ueno and another using the private Tobu line (no JR Pass) from Asakusa.

It depends of your exact schelude. A combination of 1 Week JR Pass and few days on JR West Pass may work if you exit from KIX, but if you exit at TYO, then 2 Week JR pass may be the best choice

my travels will be spread over 2 weeks so a 1 week isn't in the cards... i will be spending at least 2-3 days in the major cities and at least 1 in all the others. i will be landing at nrt and leaving from nrt.

what do you want to learn here?

if u r looking for alternative to 14 day jr pass then you might get 7 day jr pass + 3 day jr east pass
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/japan...ll-2009-a.html

depends on your dates

even if 3 day jr east pass not relevant for your dates, 1 week jr pass is still in the cards if you wanted - yokohama, tokyo & kamakura are all next to each other and if you want to view fuji from hakone a hakone free pass might be more suitable than travel with jr. as i said, it takes planning.

read my first post... i asked a few questions in it. i want to know if the 2 week pass is worth the price if i'm going through those areas over a 2 week period. i want to know if there are numerous stops within each city. i know it costs around 45,000 yen so would the cost of me travelling around to those cities add up to or surpass the cost of the pass.

This isnt a question anyone can answer for you.

I suggest you go to hyperdia (http://grace.hyperdia.com/cgi-english/hyperWeb.cgi), plug in your suggested itinerary, sum up how much it will all cost and compare it with the price of a JR and/or regional pass.

Try to consolidate your trip by geographically grouping them to minimize criss-crossing, then perhaps look into regional passes. Prior post mentioned JR West (in Kansai region) pass which I had used, is a great pass for value and the sights that it covers. You can get up to 4-day pass, then add as you need to (1, 2, 3 and 4 days).
Before you jump on a JR 7-day pass, do calculate the individual trip cost first to see if it pays to get the pass.
If you at least do a round trip NRT-Osaka within 7 days, then that alone justifies a 7-day pass.
So, try to consolidate your itin, then get out the calucator.

I did - and then I tried not to spend too much more energy and time on answering it than you seemed prepared to give to initial research.

Thought so!

When you get to that point, what I've answered might become useful.
