Getting free upgrades?

I've heard from a few friends that they have gotten free upgrades to business class by going early to the check-in counter dressed in a business suit and simply asking if there are any business class seats available. I am rather skeptical that this works, especially now. Has anyone tried this, particularly in Japan? How successful or unsuccessful have they been?

Thanks,
Steve

It doesn't work like that any more. If the airline has overbooked Y (NW and UA do this all the time), they will upgrade based on an algorithm which primarily takes into consideration elite status and fare basis.

Upgrades in Japan are generally done by the gate agent, not the check-in counter, as well. You might want to check the forum for the airline you are planning to fly for more information on this topic.

I got upgraded a few time on ANA for reasons I don't understand, other than being United 1K.

Usually I would be in traveling clothes.
