I'll be back for lots of good mabo when I recover from the battery of treatments for my brain cancer of which the remants have been relocated to my right jaw at the expense of losing half my right brain via suction surgery tool.

When it comes to pachinko, is there any difference among parlors (in seemingly reputable areas), or are they all alike to the same extent as American slot/table game casinos?

There are many differences, including location of the parlor, location of machines in the parlors, types of machines, etc.

I suggest a read of this article for an overview of the genre.

Great Sankei story (in Japanese only, unfortunately) about the potential for a JAL/ANA merger. Money quote:

「ＪＡＬとＡＮＡが統合した場合、社名が問題になる。『ＪＡＮＡ』（じゃーな）だと、別れのあいさつみたい で縁起が悪い。『ＡＮＡＬ』（アナル）は、絶対にダメだ」

(Translation: "If JAL and ANA merged, the company name would become an issue. 'JANA is bad because it sounds like a way to say goodbye. ANAL is completely out of the question.'")

Personally, I find the ANAL name quite appropriate for both their management styles.

It's not you he's saluting. It's his colleague in plain clothes, who's been assigned to trail you.

Luckily for him, that assignment requires no particular physical fitness, just a tolerance of smokey Dotour coffee shops.

I just returned from the Dormy Inn Nagoya's public bath, where I witnessed the dreaded "gaijin enters bath completely dry, having not showered, scrubbed, showered, scrubbed, rinsed, rinsed.' This particular fellow happened to be a bear, as well. I cringed as I watched him reach back to scratch (clean?) his bottom.

Hard to blame them. A night's stay in the Nagoya Dormy Inn calls for a sheep dip, rather than a shower, scrub, shower, scrub, rinse, rinse. ;)
