golden week

Is a trip to Japan between April 28-May 5 going to be a waste of time? I understand the Japanese call this period of time Golden Week and many things could be closed.

What goes on on Greenery Day? Sounds nice.

I've been in Tokyo during Golden week before. Probably one of the best places to be as so many people apparantly leave it. Didn't seem that different. A few more stores closed, the odd museum opening time shifted, nothing spectacular. Certainly no comparison with the first day of the New Year and the day before and the day after that (that's when the city effectively shuts down)

Now LEAVING Tokyo, or visiting beauty sites or historic towns or anywhere of touristic interest to Japanese couples and families... that's another story, and something I'll keep trying to avoid.

Excellent post by the OP.
Green day, think it's the previous emperors birthday, not to be confused with prancing pseudo punk pretenders of the same name.

Last year I travelled from the UK to Japan on the first Monday after Golden Week and the plane was jam packed with Japanese returning home. Immigration for me and the few non-Japanese passengers was a breeze though and after that everything seemed business as usual. This year I am leaving it until a week later, hopefully avoiding the crowded plane on the way out.
