NEX + Suica Pack

I'm not sure if this is news to some of you, but since Suica and PassMo (and I guess, Icoca?) are interchangeable now, there's a great deal for FOREIGNERS to Japan - the NEX+Suica Package.

It can only be purchased at NaRiTa airport, and costs 3500Yen. However, that includes one way on NEX (which costs 3000-4000 Yen normally), the 500 yen deposit, and 1500 yen on the Suica Card.

Other key facts:
  • Foreign passport holders only,
  • Goes to any station along the NEX route, though Yokohama, for only 1500 Yen
  • Collectable Suica card for those of you who do that sort of thing.

JR East Website Explaining the Package (which is, of course, confusing)

P.S.: This is actually a better deal, even if you go to Japan regularly (or at least to the airport regularly) than buying tickets separately, I think (especially if you go to Yokohama). The normal ticket price to Tokyo Station is 3000 yen. With the ticket you pay 3500 - and you can just bring the suica to the JR office and transfer the money to your existing suica and get the deposit refund. Conceivably they should do it - they seemed to be fine with it when I combined my Suica and my ex's as a present for her when I left Japan.

While Suica is compatable with ICOCA and PASMO, PASMO is not comptable with ICOCA. To spice things up, ICOCA is comptatable with PiTaPa, but Suica even though comptable with ICOCA, is not. They're working on fixing all this up by 2008 or abouts.

I find out that this deal is a very GOOD deal. Especially if one is going to a quite distant area such as Yokohama or Omiya. I recommend it to all my expat colleagues and friends.

The passport was checked loosely, I even could buy 2 SUICA&NEX by showing my passports (current & old ones) to the counter agent. Unbelievable.

I think that others (and even me) have posted this already but for some reason I can't find the thread.

I've used this twice. If you have another Suica card, run down the balance on this one to zero and then you can get your Y500 back at any JR ticket office. If you don't run down the balance to zero, they will charge you Y210 or something like that to refund the cash balance.

You could use this ticket to go as far as Kurihama, which is about Y4500 on its own! On the other hand, once you get there, you're in Kurihama, which is not too helpful if -- say -- your hotel is in Shinjuku.
