Sorry, you pretty much missed it in Tokyo this year. Maybe up in Hokkaido?

I'm not sure if you've understood the notion of transience and ephemerality which cherry blossoms evoke in the national psyche. They are celebrated precisely because they don't last long.

Please refer to the map here and consider getting a JR pass to travel up to Aomori if you're serious about seeing Sakura.

Yokoso flyertalk gift!

You might get to see the wisteria, and Tokyo will be alive with azalias.

My favorite cherry-blossom themed haiku:

Sake nakute
nan no onore ga
sakura kana

Without sake
What is the point of
cherry blossoms?

Arrived in Osaka today and did head there. Last night of the festival. The white cherry blossoms were a little past prime - but the pink ones were spectacular. And the scene - oh my! Imagine hundreds of food stalls and thousands of people at 8 pm. For those of you in Osaka the next few days - the festival will be gone - but I think those pink cherry blossoms will last a while. If anyone is still chasing and is in the NY area, this weekend is the Sakura Matsuri at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and the cherry trees are gorgeous. Lilacs are also blooming, and some of the wisteria have started.

On the down side, the lines to get in are ridiculous (fortunately I was able to use the extremely short members' line) and it's quite crowded. But in addition to the flowers, you get to see NY kids dressed up in the gothic Lolita look!
