JR Rail Question

I will be taking my familiy to Japan next summer and am curious if anyone knows how many JR Rail passes I would need to purchase. I know DW, our teenage son and myself will need one, but I am unsure if our 3 year old daughter and 2 year old son will need one.

Looks like it is not necessary - but maybe worth considering if you are travelling at peak times.

During the summer vacations there are some dates when thhe trains are very full - in those situations you might consider buying child passes so that you can reserve seats for your two youngest children.
