Not sure about that one. The Okura is like a Japanese zombie that refuses to die, and then gets so old that gets declared a "Living National Treasure", which means it can't be killed. The government will prop it up.

The entire complex will likely turn into what the Aoyama Danchi has become....

Man, I miss that crumbling pile. Replaced with one of the most soulless, uninviting, and plastic buildings anywhere. In that case, I hope the Okura never closes. I love that Bond lobby, always on the lookout for Blofeld and the fembots.

So sad to see it go: closing after 26 years of business and 16 of those years from me. It was home away from home.

I have never stayed at the hotel, but am a regular at its sushi restaurant Mao, so am sad to hear that it will be closing next year. I'll have to make sure to go as much as possible while I still can, it's a special place.

Okura is definitely trying to figure out how to rebuild or refurb their rooms to bring them up to standard. But the food there is still outstanding, the lobby with its timeless charm and serenity is still still one of the nicest in the world, and the service is the best of any Japanese hotel.

To me, the street level has always made me want to say "can this really be the place that people are talking about?" Maybe it's Japanese culture......

True, but on the other hand it makes for incredibly easy parking if you're recognized as a "regular."

Thank you and good bye, Seiyo Ginza. You've been a wonderful home in Tokyo for the last 15 years.
