Apple Pay is widely used, mainly on the Japanese flavors of it with JP-issued cards (iD and QuicPay). For other credit cards, just say you're paying with contactless and you can pay with your card via Apple Pay that way.

We have a Schwab account and use the ATM's at 7-11 or Family Mart on our trips to Japan. Never had a problem, decent exchange rates, and Schwab rebates the ATM fees...
