Smart Ex Registration and UK Credit Card

I’ve been trying to register for the Smart Ex website and it can’t verify my UK issued Mastercard Credit Card or Visa Debit Card.

Anyone had these issues before and if so, how did you resolve them?

From speaking with the Bank of Scotland today, it appears that the verification was declined as the 1yen amount that Smart Ex use to verify the card is too small and falls foul of the banks fraud prevention policy.
The bank advised there is nothing they can do to allow verification, and that this applies to both my Bank Of Scotland and Halifax Mastercards.

My plan is just to go to a train station on arrival. Buy the tickets I need, book the seats etc.

I couldn't get multiple Visa/MCs to work, but my AMEX worked without problems.

I don’t think my employer would be too happy if I used my corporate AMEX.

I had hoped to be able to take advantage of the discounted tickets available through Smart Ex.

Try signing up for another bank or prepaid card? I've heard friends say good things about Monzo.
