Transfer security at Narita

If I’m connecting from USA in NRT to HKG will I need to go through security again in NRT? And how about vice versa? The NRT website is not very clear on this.

Yes you will need to go through security. See https://www.narita-airport.jp/en/sec...connection_ss/ and the middle portion of the figure where it says "Connection".

For transit at NRT if you are arriving from USA, you do not pass through a transit security checkpoint. You can go directly to the departure area. On the return journey from Hong Kong, you will pass through a security checkpoint at NRT.

[CORRECTION - You will go through transit security on both legs of your trip - per Pickles report below]

As much as I trust the jibster in general, the first point is wrong. The transit checkpoint for all flights, including those from the US, is back. And if you're unlucky, you'll take 30-40 minutes to get through it.

Interesting, when did that come back? A fairly recent change?

I'm not sure when it came back, but I just did it two weeks ago. Luckily it took less than 5 minutes for me.

I experienced this last month transiting to a flight to the USA. It was a zoo and took about a half hour. The line grew as I waited and I would not be surprised if many waited a lot longer than that.

I just got off NH 181 from HNL. Did not go through security before heading to my connecting gate.

I don't know if it's back to no security checkpoint for connections coming from the US, or it varies depending on some unknown factors, as I've experienced both in the last 18 months or so.

IDK, maybe it was because of the time of day and the number of arrivals at the same time.. I do know Terminal 1 was very crowded, this was about 1600 on Sunday.

I know the thread topic is NRT, but I had to go through transfer security at HND from the US (JAL flight from DFW) before connecting onward to HKG last year.

It's inconsistent. Just arrived HND from US and they let us go upstairs directly from the end of the jet bridge ---> no transfer security!
Only happened a couple of times like this at HND, and not sure what their reasoning is.
(I didn't even show a BP or itinerary!!)

(Added: maybe it depends on which gate one arrives at?)
