You can now add ICOCA to Apple Pay

As reported Impress Watch (https://www.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/1511685.html), starting today (6/27 Japan Time) you can add ICOCA to your iPhone/Apple Watch, similar to Suica/PASMO. Probably not that useful for the majority of visitors already have either Suica or PASMO on their iPhones/watches, but for those wanting to have more than 20k man (or 40k man between Suica/PASMO) at any given time, then you now have another choice, or if you prefer the design of ICOCA to Sucia/PASMO.

Useful to know.

Are there any JRWest benefits from using an ICOCA?

I do pretty well out of JREPoints and suica in Tokyo.

Nope, just tested with a CashApp prepaid Visa (US) and it works fine.

As a total newbie, what is this ICOCA? I don't see it in the wallet. My digital Suica has a low balance and once I drain it to zero, I wouldn't mind a new card if it lets me use my Chase Sapphire Reserve.

It's similar to (or same as) Suica/PASMO, just JR West version of Suica. As of right now, people are reporting that foreign VISA cards can be used to re-charge it as an alternative to SUICA/PASMO which don't allow foreign VISA cards.

So how do I add it to my Apple Wallet? Can I use it to take transit in Tokyo without any limitations?

Yea, I can't charge either the digital Suica/PASMO with my CSR.

You should see ICOCA as an option when you try to add a new Transit Card in Apple Wallet. If you don't see it it is possible that you have to update your iPhone (just a guess though, I am on latest iOS version).

This is what my Apple Wallet screen shows for the options (scrolling to the bottom for Japan):

You should be able to use ICOCA in Tokyo just like Suica/PASMO. They are interchangeable for the most part.

This is great news if it means transpo coding on the CSR and other foreign visas. Now have to wait for my replacement csr to arrive to test 😂

So why is there another new card? What are the advantages?

I know you're not going to believe
me, but I swear there isn't an option for ICOCA. I only see Suica and PASMO.

I believe you, but it’s there for me on an iPhone 13.

What is going on? Could it be that we have different versions of the iPhone? I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max on the latest iOS (16.5?).
