Shin-Yokohama Line open

A new train line opened this past weekend connecting the Tokyu network to Shin-Yokohama, with through service from Shibuya and Meguro. For many people on the south and west sides of Tokyo, this is now the fastest way to connect to the Shinkansen for Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, etc.

This was a long waited line. For visitors, this gives convenient access to Shin-Yokohama from Shinjuku/Shibuya area. In timewise may be more convenient to head to Shin-Yokohama than Tokyo or Shinagawa to catch Shinkansen. You just have to pay a separate fare on Tokyu Line to get to Shin-Yokohama. However, for local residents of Kanagawa, this gives direct access to Tokyo which is a big part of this new line.

One note about if you are planning to catch Shinkansen at Shin-Yokohama using this new Shin-Yokohama Line. The platform of Shin-Yokohama station of the Tokyu/Sotetsu Line is located at B4 (basement 4 level) underground. From the platform, take two or three different escalators to get to the ticketing level of B1. From B1 level go out to the ground level and use the overpass to cross the street to JR Shin-Yokohama station. You want to schedule 10 min.(some are suggesting 15 min.) plus from the arrival at Shin Yokohama station on the Tokyu/Sotetsu Line to the platform of Shinkansen Shin-Yokohama station.

The website is in Japanese but has pictures of the transfer from the Tokyu/Sotetsu Shin-Yokohama station to the Shinkansen Shin-Yokohama station.
