Although this question concerns Japan as a destination, I believe you will get a better response by asking at the forum relevant to the airline you are looking to redeem your award points/miles with.

Current discussion in the Avios British Airways (One World) forum is about (mostly premium) travel to the Japan Rugby Championships in 2019. You may want to look through there to get some ideas or tips, or just familiarise yourself with some of the challenges of getting award tickets for a very popular event.
