Coca Cola Plus Coffee
Coca-Cola Japan has introduced coffee flavored cola "Coca Cola Plus Coffee" (website in Japanese but with pictures) starting Sept. 17, available at vending machines and convenience stores nation wide in Japan. Sept. 2017 Coca-Cola Japan has test marketed coffee flavored cola through vending machines in Kanto and Tohoku region. Coca-Cola Japan said test marketing was received very favorable and decided to sell coffee flavor cola nation wide this September.

Someone in R&D may well have been holidaying in Alicante, Spain.
Very typical there (and famously so in Alcoy) to have coke mixed with coffee liqueur - particularly the local Plis Play brand. We party hard, we party long!!!
Next year, they might try going for a Kalimotxo edition - coke with red wine.
