Am also interested in the Diet Building tour - but I'll probably wait a couple of years so that my daughter will appreciate it better.

Landing in Tokyo and just walking around would be something like landing in Los Angeles and just walking around. You may miss a lot, and what you do find may not be particularly interesting.
I did a search on Amazon of "walking tours of tokyo," and this is the list that came up.

I'll expect nothing but High Level from you.
And remember, "a walk begins with a cheerful greeting". Don't let me down!

I used TripleLights to find a reasonable private guide. Money well spent -- the guide came up with a draft itinerary and we changed it based upon my needs. It worked very well.

The website has short introductory videos by each guide, and you'll be able to see how well the guide is able to speak (or not well, in some cases). This was a great way for me to get introduced to the city, and to have someone to answer any questions I had.

Without a doubt, it made the balance of the trip go smoother
