If you're taking the train from Tokyo to Kobe, Kyoto is on the way. It's about an hour by train from Kobe.

A few years ago I opened a checking account at Capital One-360 bank for the amazing exchange rates at ATM's around the world.

All of my withdrawals at Japan 7-11 store ATM's have been at interbank rate with no fees! NRT also has "7 Bank" ATM's.

Important: Notify the bank of travel plans or they will lock the account after the first international withdrawal. I had this happen once and called the bank in MN from Japan to unlock the account.

Thanks roberto99. Yes, I always let my bank and CC company know. Forgot once in Ireland and likewise had to call after being denied a charge.
