Getting close to Mt. Fuji

What's the best place to view Fuji-san within a train ride of Tokyo (and not on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen)?

Previously, I tried going to Kawaguchiko (from Shinjuku station via Chuo line and then Fujikyu Railway), but the day turned foggy and we were stuck in a what seemed like a boring small town with nothing to do but try the local noodle dish and head home.

Any advice appreciated.

Your other options would be the JR Tokaido Line and JR Gotemba Line. There's not much along the Gotemba Line, but it can be very pretty in the spring and fall.

If you try to view Fuji in the summer, you're probably out of luck.

It is most visible between December and March, even from the middle of Tokyo.

Not sure if it's your thing but you could go to Fuji-Q Highland. The risk of not being able to see Mt Fuji due to weather is the same as from Kawaguchiko but there's lots more to do in case you get stuck.

From where to view Mt Fuji (Japan Guide)

How about the Odakyu Romancecar from Shinjuku to Hakone? If it's not a clear day you can at least enjoy onsen in Hakone.

Yeah, I like this option best. Plus, a new train to ride!
