Gyudon App

have you ever been lost in Tokyo and the craving for gyudon hits?

This app is the answer! Someone actually mapped all the gyudon shops.

Useful!

My GF will be deleting this app repeatedly from my iphone - but I guess she can't complain too much as she likes to eat Ramen at 3am before going home - what is wrong with these people that eat all night long? If I did that I would blow up like a whale - somehow she eats it all and never gains weight - dives me nuts!

Not sure why one needs an app for this, wherever you are in central Tokyo, all you have to do is just look around!

Oh my god that's brilliant. I mean, I'm not a gyudon person really (although I do love me some unadon now and then), but it piqued my interest...

I searched for ラーメン in the play store... there are ramen maps also! I feel like my life is now complete. =D

I neglected to mention in my original post. This app is for all of Japan. And someone actually put this app together and let us have it for free! Buy that person an XL gyudon!

Is the app just for the major chains like Matsuya, Sukiya, Yoshinoya etc? Or does it tell you about obscure single store locations as well? Couldn't quite tell from the review. If it's just chains then Google Maps works pretty well.

They seem to all (?) use the same database at ramendb.supleks.jp. That being said, I've decided I like 「ラーメンマップ」by YSS at Tokyo. I may continue looking, because I'd really like to be able to do more results filtering (like, for example, only show me tonkotsu places?).

And no, it's not just restaurants in japan! It shows restaurants in america, too! O_o

It does appear to only be the major chains. Its big selling point seems to be the chain logo icons as pins on the map, so you can tell which chain each restaurant is. That said, I don't know of a non-chain store I could try to find with it in order to test it out. And one of the option screens, from the screenshot, does say "chain" on it (for chain selection).

It's a fun silly app that serves an important purpose. When you first open it and it shows all of Japan, it shows only a few pins. When you zoom in to Tokyo, for example, the pins begin to rain down. And when you zoom into a district, it rains even more pins!

Am in SFO now, really would like a gyudon now. With "sauce".

Getting off topic from the app itself, is there a non-chain place that serves Gyudon in Tokyo that folks would recommend? I really love the Gyudon at Yoshinoya but every time I'm there, I think to myself that there must be something even better and/or more authentic.

I can't imagine what "more authentic" would mean in the context of gyudon. What is it about Yoshinoya that you find "inauthentic"?

For me, one of the most "authentic" experiences was going for an early breakfast in Yoshinoya at Fukuoka station. It was basically me and a bunch of salarymen filling up before their commute.
