But it obviously would be better if you did not have to file and/or pay any tax to the US by not being a citizen or resident. "Tax benefits"???? What's that? EIC?
Also, due to the "Jobs Act" of 2004 a US green card holder with moderate income and/or assets is liable for tax after leaving the US and has to file 8854. It's perverse.

175 page filing, which takes dozens of man-hours to put together, plus what I pay to my lawyer to make sure it's all on the up-and-up, is certainly not worth GE.

If your accountant does your taxes correctly, you shouldn't get anything back. Maybe even owe the IRS an amount, but not big enough to trigger a penalty.
