I would agree with that.

I would agree with that. Getting to the point where having to file a tax return more than outweighs the benefit of having a passport.

Thirty minutes once a year on turbotax and the tax benefits that result aren't worth it? You have to file anyway, so why not maximize the benefit?

Thirty minutes!?

Some of us have to do more than file a 2555-EZ form.

And you wouldn't be too bright to file 2555-EZ since it doesn't allow for foreign housing exclusion. Tokyo offers the highest on the planet, I think. $117,000.

But it obviously would be better if you did not have to file and/or pay any tax to the US by not being a citizen or resident. "Tax benefits"???? What's that? EIC?

Also, due to the "Jobs Act" of 2004 a US green card holder with moderate income and/or assets is liable for tax after leaving the US and has to file 8854. It's perverse.

175 page filing, which takes dozens of man-hours to put together, plus what I pay to my lawyer to make sure it's all on the up-and-up, is certainly not worth GE.

Most people who have taxes that complicated use an accountant.

You end up getting more money back than you spend on the accountant services.

If your accountant does your taxes correctly, you shouldn't get anything back. Maybe even owe the IRS an amount, but not big enough to trigger a penalty.
