Baggage transfer in NRT [overnight connection]

Hi FTers,

I want to ask you guys a question about baggage transfer in NRT. I am arrive on a NH flight from PEK to NRT and depart the next day from NRT to BOS. Do I need to pick up my checked bags in NRT or I can route them to BOS directly? Is there an interline agreement between NH and JL? Can I check in for JL flight after I arrive in NRT and drop off my bags if there is no interline?

TIA!

As you have an overnight connection you will need to pick up your bags and take them with you to wherever you are staying. You can then check in the bags for your JL flight on the day of departure.

Previously I had a trip on JL and I had an overnight layover at NRT, they have checked my bag directly to destination without going thru customs, did they do that by mistake?

Baggage transfer in NRT

It's generally possible if you are connecting on a single ticket, but it is unlikely with a two-ticket connection. I would plan to pick up your luggage and pay the nominal fee to store it at NRT if you don't want to take it with you.

How long ago was your Previous flight? The rules regarding overnight baggage connection can change, usually due to local airport regulation.

Also, your previous flight was JL-JL connection at NRT. This time it is NH-JL connection at NRT, which can make a difference. By the way, NH and JL do have interline agreement. As for once you clear customs/immigration at NRT checking your bag at JL for your next day flight to BOS, I am almost certain that JL will not accept check baggage for next days flight at NRT.

Best is to call NH, since your PEK-NRT flight is NH so NH will be the airline checking your bags at PEK, that if it is possible to check your luggage all the way to Boston on overnight connection at NRT.

Baggage transfer in NRT

Thanks for the information. My previous trip on JL was on Nov 2013, but looks like I will need to take my baggages with me this time.

Since this seems to be turning into a general "overnight connection at NRT" thread, I'm going to move this to the Japan forum for better response.

I have this overnight connection on a single ticket. Will I be able to check a bag all the way through without picking it up during my 18 hour layover?

Flight: SIN - NRT, UA 804 SIN-NRT
Arrive: 2:00 p.m.

Flight: NRT - ORD, UA 9679 Operated by ANA All Nippon Airways.
Depart: 10:45 a.m.

No, you will need to pick it up upon arrival.

Interesting. I thought it was possible to interline if the time between flights was less than 24 hours, but I can't say that I've actually done this myself.

I believe it's possible if it's the same operating airline, but otherwise not (as I was told when calling NH a long time ago). That being said, UA and NH are closely tied these days so it may be possible.

BangkokTraveler, I would call UA and NH (in Japan) to check if this is indeed possible.
