Hi,

We'll have a 4-5 hours layover at CTS flying to HND in December (flying with JAL in J). Unfortunately my Oneworld status only allows me to guest one family member to the lounge so this option is out.

Any suggestions on how to spend the layover time in comfort? Is there anywhere close by the airport that we can pay a quick visit without risking our flight?

Are you connecting from a domestic or internaional flight? And is it 4 or 5 hours?

If you don't want to stray from the airport, you could:

Catch a movie at the Jaga Pokkuri Theatre.
Try the flight simulator in the airport museum.
Visit the Doraemon attraction. ()
Visit the airport onsen.
Or kill time at a restaurant.

There is enough at CTS to kill time in my opinion. If you like Japanese food the restaurant offerings there are impressive for such a small airport. Unique compared to the other Japan airports they have genghis khan lamb BBQ. Which is similar to Korean BBQ in that you have a personal grill in front of you. Also they have crab restaurants as well as many restaurants serving the seafood that Hokkaido is famous for.

Did you know arriving international business class passengers are allowed to use the domestic lounge for the connecting flight?

If you prefer going out of the airport, Chitose Outlet Mall could be the place. It offers free shuttle to/from CTS.

This is the part I was not sure about OP.

Is OP arriving to CTS on international flight? If OP is arriving on OneWorld carrier in business class then I think OP and family have access to JAL Sakura Lounge at CTS.

Is OP transiting to international flight at HND or NRT? If OP is transiting to international flight at HND or NRT to OneWorld carrier in business class then I think OP and family have access to JAL Sakura Lounge at CTS.

If OP is talking about flying JL in J as domestic Class-J then OP has to follow the guest policy of JAL lounge for OneWorld Emerald or Sapphire since domestic Class-J will not give lounge access.

Anyway, JAL Sakura Lounge at CTS is small. However, Sakura Lounge at CTS has done renovation and reopened this past March. I do not think there is window, but I do not remember for sure. I am recalling only JAL lounges in Japan with windows with view outside that I can recall are at HND and NRT. If you are with family, especially if you are with little one, then in less than an hour you will reach the point want to leave the lounge to stretch.

As other has mentioned, CTS has opened new restaurant/entertainment area few years ago. Can enjoy local Hokkaido cuisines, have few places to look around and Onsen (public hot tub) right at the terminal, also shops with lots of local souvenir gifts.

If you really want to go outside of the airport, as already suggested there is an outlet mall. Also there is Michi-no-eki (道の駅) which is a rest area for automobile with restaurants and gifts shops which become very popular in Japan because often restaurants and gift shops at Michi-no-eki has local goods. However, I think CTS has far more selection of Hokkaido goods than Michi-no-eki. However, Michi-no-eki at Chitose has small museum about salmon called Salmon Park. Hokkaido has various rivers which salmon come back every year for spawning. The river running through Chitose is one of them and you can see how salmon swim back through the river. It is museum so it is visual display, but I do think you need to able to listen and read Japanese to understand the display. Michi-no-eki is 10 minutes by taxi from CTS and fare is around JPY 2000 each way.

This is our situation.
