Train queries

What works out cheaper:

Return NEX ticket & SUICA card for local journeys around Tokyo - as far as Ibaraki airport & the Atsugi area + 1 way Shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Osaka

or a 2 week JR Rail Pass.

I'm planning to make the return journey from Osaka to Tokyo on the brokendreamsliner if it gets fixed by the time I visit Japan in October.

The rule of thumb is that a 1 week JR pass is in the same ballpark as the cost of a round trip by Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka.

If you're only contemplating some short trips in the Tokyo area and a one-way ticket to Osaka, you're almost certainly better off buying individual tickets.

I just saw that JR now offers a Kanto 1 week pass for something like 8000 yen. That plus shinkansen might be cheapest.
