Book now or wait: LAX-NRT

I'm planning on taking my extended family on a trip to Japan next year towards the end of May and traveling with 8 people means that airfare prices end up making a huge difference.

I'm currently seeing $849 through Malaysia Air from LAX. My only question now is whether to buy now or to hold out for better prices. Any thoughts? Also has anyone had success working through a travel agent for better unpublished rates?

Thanks!

I would try to look for Japanese consolidator agents. They sell cheaper than regular online fares sometimes. JTB, Kintetsu are some, there's others too. But watch out for them sneaking the fuel surcharges.

$849 is pretty good for a May roundtrip.

The comments above are not that helpful. hdclover, is just plain wrong, there are times when close-in fares can be cheaper. And originating in the US, closetfan's comments are far more applicable to business and first class fares.

I did a trial booking out May 14, back May 22, and got $821.

I'd say you can go ahead and book, it won't get much lower than this for a nonstop flight.

Thanks for the help. Now I can start the work of trying to find hotels for 8 people in Japan.

LAX is by far the cheapest U.S. gateway for trips to Japan, so you've made a good start.

Does the Op really need to fly into NRT? HND flights are often cheaper and there are some non stops LAX-NRT, for example daily on DL on the A330, which is a very nice aircraft, possibly the best that DL operates for coach, newish with AVOD at every seat.

No, there's no need to fly into NRT as opposed to HND. In fact, I'd prefer to fly Delta so I can get miles and the possibility of an upgrade. However, from the prices I've seen so far it's around a $200 difference. I don't think Delta has posted their spring sales prices yet.
