I gave the time for the last bus of the day, but should have been more accurate. NRT to ITM, then highway bus should get the OP to Kyoto by 20:00 or so. Here's the bus schedule:

Been on that bus recently and at night it rarely takes more than 45 minutes. Across the street from where the bus drops you there are always taxis.

Another benefit of the bus over train, in my opinion, is that you don't have to lug your luggage and try to find a place for it. The bus guy will just load it under the bus and pull it out for you when you arrive. You just sit upstairs and enjoy the view.

at this point we figure we can just stay one night in Tokyo and take the train to Kyoto but I am confused on the best way to do this.
There are no flight alternatives (So SO not happy with Jetstar airlines).

Any tips on how to do this. we figured to go from NRT to Shingawa (stay somewhere around there for a nigh and take a train to kyoto the next day maybe? I just dont know which station from Shingawa to go to and what train to take to kyoto, which station i would be at and how to find my hotel
wow im stressing!
any help is appreciated!!
I'd also recommend that you two head straight to Kyoto after landing NRT. Once you land, exchange your voucher for the JR Pass and then get tickets from NRT to Shinagawa, then the Hikari Shinkansen to Kyoto. Since you've only got a few days in Japan, why burn half a day in Shinagawa sleeping? The Shinkansen is roomier than an airplane flight, is a Japanese icon and best of all, if you get a window seat, great for napping! Once you arrive at Kyoto Station, you can grab a bowl of ramen upstairs or flag a cab to get to your hotel. Be sure to have the address in Japanese ready for the cab driver. After doing all of this, you two should be exhausted and will sleep soundly. Next morning, go explore!
