Question Labor Thanks giving holiday (nov 23rd) Is it a big holiday?

Hello,
Tried a search but turned up nothing about it.

I'm putting an itinerary together and I may be traveling near or on this date and was wondering if it is the kind of national holiday that might cause problems with travel, accommodations, award travel etc.

My main concern is with award ticket availability between Tokyo and Hong Kong if this is a busy travel time.

Thanks for any replies^

Nope, it's not a biggie. Stores will be open too. Most Japanese holidays are not biggies. Exceptions: Golden Week, New Year's week, and (to a somewhat lesser extent) Obon in August.

Thank you RichardInSF for replying to my question.

I feel better knowing I'm not trying to book at a time similar to Thanksgiving holiday in the US!

Thanks again,

Sincerely

Many of the legal holidays have no traditions behind them and are just reflections of the government thinking that it might be nice to have a holiday once in a while. For example, Ocean Day was plunked down in the middle of July a few years ago, and Greenery Day was originally Emperor Hirohito's birthday, but that day has since been renamed Showa Day (Hirohito's posthumous name and the name of his era), and Greenery Day has been moved to the "blank space" in Golden Week.

However, since Labor Thanksgiving Day usually falls in the same week as American Thanksgiving Day, some American expats take advantage of the day off from work to gather in one another's homes and eat turkey.

This year it's in the middle of the week, so even less impact. If it made a 3-day weekend you might see more of an effect. Nice time of year to be in Japan! Not hot, but not cold yet. Food is delicious. Beautiful fall colors. In fact, you'll see congestion any place that people go to view changing leaves.

Museums typically close on the day after a national holiday.

I thought that was just if the holiday fell on a Monday (when most museums are normally closed).

Correct. Several holidays have moved to the "Happy Monday" system, so it's often the case now.
