replacement laptop battery in Akihabara?
A friend in Central America has asked me to buy her a replacement battery for her Sony Vaio laptop.
(the model is VGP-BPS9/B, in case someone already in Tokyo could check)
Is this something I can get a good deal from a shop in Akihabara (or elsewhere in Tokyo)?
Or, am I better off to buy it online from a US store?
The US online price is about $80.
I will be hand delivering the battery, so shipping is not an issue.
thanks for any info!

You might want to ask your friend what the mA-hr rating of the original battery is, and then try to match or exceed that number. The mA-hr rating is marked on the battery and is the measure of how much power it can hold.
Some inexpensive batteries may fit, but hold much less power (lower mA-hr rating) so will not run the computer for as many hours as the original does/did.
I purchase replacement batteries for cameras and laptops from highly-rated sellers on eBay and have not had a problem.

One caveat about buying on eBay: Double check to verify that the item will be shipped from the U.S. Some sellers suggest that they are in the States, but the item is shipped from Hong Kong. This adds 2 or 3 weeks to the delivery time.

Thanks for the advice. I found a battery online for about $60 with free shipping and ordered it. Nice to be able to skip the craziness of Akihabara.
Cheers!

I was disappointed yesterday to learn that some camera batteries are now chipped, to prevent consumers from buying 3rd-party replacements.
The particular camera I was looking at was the Panasonic dmc-fz100.

Supposedly, this place sells "chipped" batteries. I've never bought so I don't know first-hand but someone recommended them to me.
