it's a pretty easy place for do it yourself. there are a lot of small wineries that probably do not fit into the tour mentality(the bus will not fit down the road).
you need
a car
couple of books on the wines of tuscany or chianti classico
find at least one book that lists the vineyards, their phone numbers, and if they do tastings
couple of good maps, we got one with all the chianti classico vineyards marked.
lot of places have a crummy sign sitting out front at the end of the drive.
lot of places have nothing. just drive up and ask if you can taste. offer to pay.
plan to pay a couple euro for each tasting.
lot of olive oil also.
do not get carried away. the wine tastes a lot better in that cellar than it does later.
do not get carried away. there are a lot of huge tour busses driving on very crooked, narrow hilly roads. there are a lot of crazies out there on bikes also.
if you plan to buy a lot, i can tell you how to drag the stuff into usa.
