Ideas for merged threads
Thanks to great suggestions by obscure2k and JBD that this forum be more organized, the moderators have merged 3 threads; FCO, where to stay in Rome, and where to stay in Florence.
Threads here tend to wander off, e.g, a discussion about gelato in a thread, "where to stay in Rome." This makes it hard for people to find the information they seek.
In order to help the moderators, perhaps we can provide them with suggestions on how to organize this Forum. Food in Rome? Food in Venice? Food in Florence? Pizza in Italy? Gelato? Airport transfers? Transportation from FCO to downtown? Naples?

Rail travel in Italy is another to consider.
Tipping is another possibility which comes to mind. Who, where, when?
Good job, Perche

I'd suggest that Rome, Florence and Venice each get a master thread. Enable the wiki on each. Since we tend to mix activities, food and lodging topics in the same thread, we should encourage folks to periodically update the wiki as an index to "important" pages in the thread regarding those various topics.
Then maybe a separate master thread on air, rail and car travel in Italy.

Suggestion: Retitle the new FCO thread
Thanks perche and NewbieRunner!
I like all the ideas proposed in this thread so far.
Regarding the new sticky on FCO, when I suggested it here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/sugge...aly-forum.html I had in mind that it would be titled like the Los Angeles sticky I linked. So something like this:
"FCO / Fiumicino Airport / Connecting / Connection / Connections Master Thread"
(And it uses all those variations and is punctuated that way so it's most easily found in a search.)
So I looked for all the links with FCO and Fiumicino in the tiitle that had something to do with making a connection, arriving or departing and posted them on that thread in the Suggestion Box forum. And as I said there, I thought then the moderator could ask for a volunteer to do the wiki (using the LAX thread as a model). And NewbieRunner incorporated all the links I posted.
The point of all the above, is that the links used to create the new "FCO" thread are just about making connections/arriving/departing and I think the thread should be titled accordingly.
Then we can have also new master threads merging other FCO related issues. For instance:
As suggested by you all above, we could have a master thread on FCO airport transfers
And we could have a master thread on Buying a SIM at FCO
- I'm just a Rome person, but obviously the other main Italian airports should get similarly treatment.

I started this for food in Florence:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/italy...er-thread.html
I can maintain the first few posts, but if we enable the wiki, that will let everyone jump in. I'm not sure if we're going the way of Italy mods or not - I can flag posts that should be merged in, or you can let me do it, either way is fine by me.
I'm comfortable working with the Florence content, where I think I have some good specific knowledge. Other folks know Rome and Venice way more than I do, so if they're up to it, similar threads for those cities would be a good idea. I feel bad calling Perche out by name, but that dude is better than any travel guide.

I think Airport Transfers is a great suggestion. Breaking down to specific popular cities where this issue frequently arises would be helpful. Airport Transfers in Venice frequently is raised as a topic.

Also note it is called "merged thread" rather than "master thread" since the latter implies 'the' resource on topic and that 'you shouldn't need to look elsewhere to be confident you've found what there is to know on the topic'.
Please note also that many of the FCO/Fiumicino threads were originally posted in other forums and moved to this forum by their respective moderators.

I thought the reason for starting this thread was to consolidate existing threads which are scattered throughout the forum so they can be found more easily.

Any chance you could enable the wiki, and/or sticky the post with the others?

The newly merged FCO thread
If you search FT for "FCO connecting" "FCO connection" "FCO connections" "Fiumicino connecting" "Fiumicino connection" or "Fiumicino connections", the new merged thread appears as one of the top three hits (the other two are this thread and the thread in the Suggestion Box!). There should be no need to include Connecting / Connection / Connections in the title.
Are there many threads dealing with FCO airport transfers or buying a SIM at FCO already? The more specific the thread title there is a chance that other topics may creep in, for example people asking about connecting in FCO and taking duty-free liquids through security or connecting in FCO and choice of lounges, or connecting in FCO and buying a SIM card, etc. I should know through my experience of managing a connection thread at another airport.

First, thanks so much for all of your help! And of course I defer to the greater powers here. But my point in suggesting the title to reflect that the merged thread regards Connections/Arriving/Departing, is so that the thread won't be used for questions regarding other FCO related issues (i.e. Airport transfers, SIM cards). That way when FTers come here looking for info about making their connection they have the one merged thread to consult and they won't have to sift through a bunch of non-connecting-related issues.
And yes, there are many threads regarding FCO transportation. To my way of thinking, if those particular threads were to be merged, it would be a sizeable resource in itself. And again, then FTers coming to this forum could easily see the options available to get into the city and post their questions in that merged thread. (I'll link those threads in a separate post so you all can decide if you think they warrant being merged into one thread).
The way the newly merged FCO thread is titled now, I think would make people inclined to post any FCO question, and therefore would defeat the purpose of having one main resource to check regarding connecting, arriving and departing from FCO.
Just my 2 cents though.

Suggestion for a Rome Layover merged thread
Another topic I've seen repeatedly on this forum over the years is what to do on a long FCO layover. I'm posting much older threads below than I have for the other FCO related merged thread suggestions, because unlike the airport itself which has undergone terminal additions/renaming etc, what to do in Rome on a layover pretty much is still the same as it was at FT's inception. - Ostia Antica ain't new
This first thread I'm linking already has a wiki - so maybe the other threads could be merged into it and it be made a sticky?
