any suggestions as to hotels.restaurants sightseeing would be appreciated.
Expect about 5 days at lake como, is that a decent amt of time?

Without coming across the wrong way, what research have you done to date?
"Active snr citizens" - what exactly does this mean? How much hiking are you willing to do?
What do you like eating? What are you after? What do you want to see?
Blanket suggestion threads are extremely difficult to advise on. You need to provide particulars and perhaps a draft itinerary for us to comment on. You will get more help that way.
Having said that, Lake Como is a beautiful place and worth the visit. 5 days is a while but there is a lot to see and the ferry schedules don't allow for easy point to point and slick connections.
Consensus is that staying in Bellagio or Varenna or Menaggio gives you the most options and frees up the rest of the lake for easier exploring. Many suggestions have been made on a thread that's been going on the last couple of days, perhaps you could have a look at that if you haven't already.
