Bergamo

I'm thinking about the possibility of flying Rynair from BCN to the Bergamo airport of Milano (yes, yes, I know it's Ryanair) instead of MXP.

Would it be cheaper to stay (hostel-budget wise with 2 people) in Bergamo rather than Milano itself, and then perhaps train into the city for the day? Or is accommodation just as expensive?

Supposing we want to get to Pisa after this first leg. Can one train straight from Bergamo to Pisa, or would one still have to go back into Milano, and catch a train from there?

Also, any idea how much a train (return) costs between Milano and Bergamo? Finally, is Bergamo a nice place (well I'm sure all Italian towns are nice, but still)

Bergamo is a nice city. There is no direct train from Bergamo to Pisa, you have to change in Milano, not necessarily at the main station ( stazione centrale ).

IMHO Bergamo - especially the citta' alta - is worth a day in its own right.

While you're there, make sure to try a glass of Valcalepio, a good Bergamo-area wine. ^

Bergamo is definitely worth a day esp. if the weather is nice. Very cool. If you stay there and go into Milan it will be about 9-10 euro RT per person, so figure that in. I stayed in Milan for ~$100 per night in Nov and last weekend via Priceline/Hotwire; very nice hotels. So if you're going to spend more time in Milan it's probably not worth it. I think the train rides per person would eat up a lot of savings.

I've heard very good things about Bergamo if you're interested in art/architecture.
Sunday Times UK article.

Be sure to take a "tour" of the Lombard Romanesque Basilica at this link. Enlarge to full screen and rotate or zoom in/out as desired.
