Last Minute
I want to go Rome today, and can't find a hotel and have no idea where or what to see in rome.
I think the intercontinental is a safe bet for a hotel, although the waldorf looks really nice.
The hotel for today 21-23 shows fully booked, what are the chances of me getting 3 rooms? I'm a plat ambassador, but I'm only giving maybe 12 hours notice?

Sofitel is a nice property with elegant rooms (200 meters from IC).
Radisson is a contemporary hotel with a large outdoor pool. Rooms are small, service is not excellent. Just opposite Termini Station (last stop from the airport).
Waldorf=Astoria is the former Hilton. Great pool, excellent service, superb breakfast, rather kitsch rooms, out of action.
Secret gem: San Anselmo hotel. Not in the very centre of Rome, but very elegant boutique hotel with excellent service.
Cheap alternative : Mercure Roma Delta Colosseo : great location, very affordable, quite basic room, outdoor pool.

I'm having trouble finding hotels. Price is not an issue, and I don't mind spending a lot of money at all. It's my dads 50th bday and we'll only be there 2 nights.
Theres 4 of us going, my parents and then my sister. So we need either 1 room with connectings, or 3 seperate rooms which is pretty much not ideal.
Sofitel, IC both seem to be taken. The crown plaza looks really nice though. The penthosue at the waldorf isn't available either which looked amazing.

You might consider the competitors of the IC of the Starwood brand also:
Westin Excelsior, close to Villa Borghese on Via Veneto
St. Regis (close to Central Station / statione termini - have staye there back in 2005 and wrote a report
Hotel Eden

You really want the Russie if money is not an option.
The Radisson-run Es Hotel also got a very positive newspaper write-up in the UK this week.
You can't use your Plat status because:
a) not 24 hours notice
b) 1 room only
and c) you would be charged a ludicrous rate, to compensate the hotel for the cost of kicking out and rehousing another guest
However, if you ring them you might find a last minute cancellation that has not fed through to the website.

contemporary design (which is not so common in Rome)
but the maintenance is largely deficient, and could transform your stay into a nightmare
large outdoor pool
but the heating system is out of order (even in hot summer, it is impossible to swim)
easy access from airport (Termini station)
but some rooms have view over the tracks (beware of the the noise)
service is awfull
