Italy recently started processing US passports at the “e-gates” again after almost 2 years of forcing you into the general line. So if you have a US or EU passport the lines are not too long.
if you are connecting to an EU flight be warned that the walk at FCO is quite long. Just so you can be forced through the duty free shops.
